The Beach Bar Bucket List: Bonaire Edition

SMB Vacations

Whether you're sipping an emerald-hued cactus cocktail or savoring a local craft beer, there's no better way to soak up the laid-back vibe of Bonaire than by spending time at one of its beach bars. Historically, Bonaire’s watering holes catered mainly to scuba divers, but the island has evolved into a vibrant destination with a beach bar to suit every traveler’s taste. Here are my top picks for unforgettable beach bars on this Dutch Caribbean gem. Cheers to your next adventure!

Pureocean Beachside Bar

Let's start with a classic favorite at Divi Flamingo Beach Resort & Casino. Pureocean Beachside Bar checks all the boxes for an ideal beach hangout and more. Set against a backdrop of a manmade pier, it offers great snacks, signature drinks, and incredible sunsets. But what sets it apart is its stellar snorkeling spot. Descend a few stairs into a marine life wonderland, then float back to the bar for some Bonairean cheese balls and a Green Bonaire cocktail. Repeat as necessary. Locals and visitors alike enjoy their live entertainment Happy Hours on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays.

Insider’s Tip: Avoid sitting on the wooden stairs leading to the water when putting on your snorkel gear; territorial crabs might pinch your (beach) bum!

Ocean Oasis Beach Club

Ocean Oasis is Bonaire’s answer to modern clubbing, a boho-chic expanse on a manmade beach. This beach club is the hotspot for nightlife with a South Beach meets South Pacific vibe. Sun lounge by day and dance under the stars by night. The creative cocktails, like the Chic Flamingo Pornstar Martini, and avant-garde food, including truffle and cheese fritters and Caribbean poke bowls, make this a must-visit.

Insider’s Tip: Check their Facebook page for special foodie events, like choose-your-own meat or fish from open-air markets on the beach.

Club Tropicana

For barefoot luxury and top-notch foodie fare, head to Club Tropicana at Delfins Beach Resort. This spot boasts a swim-up bar in a magna pool and beachfront couches with shade umbrellas. The bar's food and beverages are helmed by Jonnie and Thérèse Boer, owners of the acclaimed 3-Michelin Star De Librije in the Netherlands. A flight of ceviche and their signature Gastro Gin cocktail are highly recommended.

Insider’s Tip: Keep an eye out for dolphins, as they are often spotted from the beach.

Karel’s Beach Bar

Located on a pier in the heart of Kralendijk, Karel's Beach Bar is a central hub for locals and tourists alike. Originally known for its live music and karaoke, Karel’s has transformed into a full-service restaurant that also serves breakfast. It's the perfect spot to catch a water taxi to Klein Bonaire, Bonaire’s best beach.

Insider’s Tip: Don’t miss the adorable little red submarine, BonSea, which docks at Karel’s pier for underwater excursions.

The Hang Out Beachbar

Located on Sorobon Beach, The Hang Out Beachbar is a haven for windsurfers, thanks to some of the best conditions in the world. But even if you're not into windsurfing, it’s just as fun to watch the colorful sails. The Thursday “Table-BBQs” where you cook your own meat, chicken, or fish are a highlight.

Insider’s Tip: Follow their Facebook page for updates on special events.

Sebastian’s Beach

The newest addition to Sorobon Beach, Sebastian’s Beach, offers trendy beach vibes with beanbag chairs and fancy frozen cocktails. Known for its “Sundowners” beach parties, it becomes a massive party zone with DJ-driven tunes and beer bucket specials.

Insider’s Tip: They also serve breakfast if you want to start your day on the beach.

The Beach

Perched on a cliff with stairs leading to the sea, The Beach at Grand Windsock Resort offers a fantastic spot for casual socializing and snorkeling. It's a lively daytime hangout with a lovely sunset view. The menu includes deep-fried Dutch snacks and beach bites, with a superior cocktail menu.

Insider’s Tip: This is a cashless establishment, so bring your cards.

Bari Beach Bar

Part of the new Chogogo Dive and Beach Resort, Bari Beach Bar offers day passes that include access to a lazy river and a large freeform pool. It's a great spot for families and couples alike, with a fun atmosphere and regular live entertainment.

Insider’s Tip: Day passes are $25 for adults and $10 for children aged 2-11.

Foodies Bayside Bar & Restaurant

Though not a traditional beach bar, Foodies offers a fantastic view of Lac Bay and top-notch gourmet food. The casual, fun décor includes a tree growing through the middle of the dining room. Their cocktail and wine selections are excellent.

Insider’s Tip: Their lighting at night creates an enchanting ambiance.

Spice Beach Club

A favorite among locals and visiting families, Spice Beach Club at Eden Beach Resort is known for its musical concerts and various activities like yoga and culinary events. It's the best spot for watching Dutch football and enjoying a relaxed beach day.

Insider’s Tip: This establishment gets busy when cruise ships come into port, so plan to arrive early.

Honorable Mention: Tiki & Co Though not on a beach, Tiki & Co offers a South Pacific escape in downtown Kralendijk. Award-winning mixologist “Sir” Eddy Trenidad crafts mesmerizing cocktails here. The exotic snacks, like the octopus hotdog, are just as unique.

Insider’s Tip: Trenidad also offers mixology classes, and this will be the spot for the Bonaire bartender’s competition during Rum Week in June.

Raise a glass to these top beach bars in Bonaire, where every drink comes with a side of paradise!
